university of life Recorded on a PC in a very modest home studio (Betty's).
Five of the tracks are available for download or streaming
on the internet, however the album versions of Love on the Line
and Killer have been re-mixed to include the guitar-work
of People is a sitar-tinged, exotic, electro-stomp, featuring a short Pink Floyd style guitar solo courtesy of Al. This started out as quite a dark track, lyrically, but it kind of err, chilled out nicely, whilst maintaining a certain edginess... people are strange aren't they? Or should that be aren't we? Honey has no percussion at all and is an atmospheric piece, with a cinematic/film-score feel. Al played some guitar on this, but we put so many effects on the guitar that it sounds like a flute. Full of soft vocal harmonies. Science Degree and Fall Into are pure electronica with a similar drum sound to The Power of the Word. Science Degree is a swipe at the "sausage factory" of Higher Education. Let's just say I have a lot of certificates which supposedly prove that I am very clever... sometimes I'm not so sure.. I am thinking of taking up origami.. Fall Into has a buzzy/fuzzy bass line and is mainly about the old "black dog" as Churchill would have said. A very moody and dark one, but strangely addictive. Bedrooms is a fantasial, semi-orchestral daydream. If you have ever bunked off work / school / jury service to spend an afternoon making love to someone, this is for you. Long live naughtiness. I'm sure the above sounds very grand indeed..! I have tried hard to evoke a sense of space and place in these songs, and they sit well together as an album.. Obviously, as a poor, starving artist, I don't have a lot of fancy equipment - but I think I make good use of it! I really hope you love the songs, because that is the most important thing.. Without wanting to sound sentimental, they are from the heart... Peace, Charlie x
